There’s a heavy layer of snow and frost over all of our gardens but that doesn’t mean we aren’t enjoying some greenery in our lives. Houseplants are a simple way of keeping your green thumb active throughout the year. We’d love to have a look at the greenery in your homes, please share photos of your houseplants for our virtual winter flower show. It’s easy!
Take a picture of your favourite houseplant and share it with our club. Send your photo to ptbohortsoc@gmail.com, the pictures will be posted on our website and on social media, and we will vote in person on our favourites at our April 22 meeting.
There are very few rules: the plant must ‘live’ in your house, it’s not a seedling that’s just germinated or a cutting you are hoping will root. We also need the name of the plant.
All entries are to be submitted by March 31, 2026.
Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, so we have included two categories to meet all possibilities:

Frizzle Sizzle
House plant that I bought on one of our Horticultural Bus trips 3 years ago. It has bloomed at least four times in that period of time. If you look closely there’s a second bloom coming. When the flowers open they have a vanilla scent.
Very unusual plant. Bye the way it is a bulb that has divided since I got it (that is the second bloom). Also it spends every summer outside.

Amarillis
What I’m proud of is that the red one is from last year and the pink and white one is resurrected from two years ago. I really didn’t know what I was doing but planted both these bulbs in my garden for the growing season, let the leaves do their work, then cut back the foliage in the fall and let the bulbs rest in a cool corner of my crawlspace for a couple of months. I pulled out both bulbs and repotted them in late November and really didn’t have high hopes that they would bloom again – well was I wrong!

Joshua Tree
25 yr. old Joshua tree grown in Peterborough with a seed from Nevada. It has always been in front of a window, never outdoors.

Stag Horn Fern
Platycerium bifurcatum- stag horn fern, according to Plantnet

Crown of Thorns
This is a crown of thorns! Had it for years and these are the first blooms ever.

Orchid
One of my orchids. Its name is Phalaenopsis Veitchiana (Phal. equestris x Phal. schilleriana).

Philodendron
This philodendron came in a small, living plant arrangement 30 years ago when one of my daughters was born.

Cyclamen
Two years ago when one of our members passed away I acquired some of her houseplants. I’ve been carefully watering it and repotted it with new soil last year. Its really improved since being repotted

My Indoor Garden
Here is my photo submission, I call it my little indoor garden and it is really helping me get through this long winter. It includes two hoyas, don’t know the varieties as they were gifts, a pink kalanchoe and a lemon button fern.

Rattlesnake Plant
Rattlesnake plant or Calathea Lancifolia. Won from the Hort gift table as a ‘little’ plant a number of years ago.

Citronella
This is a citronella plant (Pelargonium citrosum) I’ve had for two years. It started out as an outdoor plant, and this is the second year I’ve over wintered it inside. As you can see, I have a grow light on it, which has kept it alive – but it’s grown so much (and I haven’t pruned it at all) that the lower leaves get no light and so aren’t doing so well. It’s right next to my desk – and though it’s a bit scraggly I love the scent of it!
